Coulterpointsoutthatsincelandfillsareair-tight,textilestakelongertobreakdown.“I’dimaginethingslikeanoldtowel,aragoranoldT-shirtwilllastareallylongtime,”shesays.Thebeautyofthriftshoppingisthatthesupplyisnever-ending,soifyoudon’tfindwhatyou’relookingforoneday,it’slikelytoshowupinnotime.
OnepersonwhoknowsthisquitewellisJodiJacyk,costumespecialistinthetheatreandfilmdepartmentattheUniversityofBritishColumbia.Shesaysthemajorityofitemsfortheuniversity’sproductionsarepurchasedsecond-hand.Becauseofhershrinkingbudget,itemslikeclothingandshoesarethriftedfromValueVillage.“Weareconstantlythriftingandwere-usecostumesformanyyears.Thriftshoppingisamucheasier,cheaperwaytodothings.”shesays.
