Accent   ThemostcommonformofEnglishusedbytheBritishrulingclassisthatoriginatingfromsouth-eastEngland(theareaaroundthecapital,London,andtheancientEnglishuniversitytownsofOxfordandCambridge).Thisformofthelanguageisknownasthe"ReceivedStandard",anditsaccentiscalledReceivedPronunciation(RP).EarlieritwasheldasbetterthanotheraccentsandreferredtoastheKing's(orQueen's)English,oreven"BBCEnglish".OriginallythiswastheformofEnglishusedbyradioandtelevision.However,thereisnowmuchmoretoleranceofvariationthantherewasinthepast;forseveraldecadesotheraccentshavebeenacceptedandarefrequentlyheard,althoughstereotypesabouttheBBCpersist.EnglishspokenwithamildScottishaccenthasareputationforbeingespeciallyeasytounderstand.Moreover,onlyapproximatelytwopercentofBritonsspeakRP.   Eveninthesoutheasttherearesignificantlydifferentaccents;thelocalinnereastLondonaccentcalledCockneyisstrikinglydifferentfromRPandcanbedifficultforoutsiderstounderstand.   InLondonitself,thebroadlocalaccentisstillchanging,partlyinfluencedbyCaribbeanspeech.Londonersspeakwithamixtureoftheseaccents,dependingonclass,age,upbringing,andsoon.
