InAugustofAD79,MountVesuviuserupted．Theentiretopofthemountainexploded,andahugeblackcloudroseintotheair．SoonstonesandhotashbegantofallonPompeii．Whentheeruptionendedtwodayslater,Pompeiiwasburiedunder20feetofstonesandashes．Almostallofitpeopleweredead．
Forcenturies,Pompeiilayburied,understoneandash．Then,intheyear1961,anItalianscientistnamedGineseppebegantouncoverPompeii．Slowly,carefullyGiuseppeandhismendug．ThecitylookedalmostthesameasithadlookedinAD79．Therewerestreetsandfountains,housesandshops．Therewasastadiumwith20,000seats,perhapsthemostimportantofall,therewereeverydayobjects,whichtellusagreatdealofaboutthepeoplewholivedinPompeii．Manyglassesandjarshadsomedarkbluecolorinthebottom,soweknowthatthepeopleofPompeiilikedwine．Theyliked
bread,too;metalbreadpanswereineverybakery．Inonebakerytherewere81round,flatleavesofbread－atypeofbreadthatisstillsoldinItalytoday．Tiny(small)boxesfilledwithadark,shinypowdertellusthatwomenlikedtoweareye-makeup．
Giuseppehaddies,buthisworkcontinues．One-fourthhasnotbeenuncoveredyet．Scientistsarestilldigging,stillmakingdiscoveriesthatdrawthetouriststoPompeii．
