Thebirdsthemselvesareasstrikingastheirdance.Theyhavebrightwhitebodieswithblacknecksandwingfeathers.Astheirnameimplies,theyalsohavea"cap"ofexposedredskin.Bycontrollingbloodflowtothecap,thecranecancauseittoswellandcommunicateaggression.
TheRed-Crownedcraneisoneofthemostendangeredofthe15cranespecies.Thereareonlyabout1500ofthesebeautifulbirdsintheworld.Aswiththeothercranes,theirmainthreatishabitatdestruction.Peoplewanttodeveloptherichlandthatcranesneedtosurvive.Peoplecutthelonggrassesthatprotectthecranesandotheranimalsinthehabitats,andfishinthesamewatersasthecranes.
