Ihavelivedinmyneighborhoodfortwentyyears.ItseemstomethatI’vespentatleasttenofthoseyearslookingforalostpet,eithermineoroneI’dseenlistedinthenewspaper’slost-petcolumn.
Recently,Iwasatitagain,goingdoor-to-doorlookingforoneofmyownlostkitties,alittleblackcatnamedNicholaswho’dslippedoutthedoorbeforeIcouldstophim.Imademyrounds,visitingwithalltheneighbors,describingNicholas.Familiarwiththisroutine,everyonepromisedtokeepaneyeoutandcallmeiftheyspottedhim.
Twoblocksfrommyhouse,Inoticedagentlemanrakingleavesintheyardofahomethathadrecentlybeensold.IintroducedmyselfandpresentedmynewneighborwiththeplightofthemissingNicholas,askingifhehadseenhim.
